How to Calculate Wedding Cake Servings
When designing your wedding cake, a great starting point is to estimate how many guests you’d like to serve. Surprisingly, not everyone will want a slice of cake, so we recommend planning for around 75% of your evening guest list. This should cover those who want a slice while avoiding leftover cake. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide on the ideal cake size based on your guest count.
Understanding Wedding Cake Servings
Wedding cakes are typically served in smaller slices—around 1" x 1" x 4". This "wedding serving" size allows you to serve more guests per tier. However, if the cake is the main dessert, you may prefer "celebration servings" around 2" x 1" x 4", which will reduce the total number of servings.
Standard Tier Sizes and Serving Guide
Each tier provides a different number of servings. Below is a general guide, but keep in mind that there are many other tier sizes available, from 4" to 12", which can be combined to create the look of your design and the number of servings you need.
2-Tier Round Cake (6" & 8") Serves approx. 56 guests with 1" x 1" x 4" wedding servings. This is a great option for smaller gatherings or intimate weddings.
3-Tier Round Cake (4", 6", & 8") Serves approx. 62 guests with 1" x 1" x 4" wedding servings. Ideal for mid-sized weddings.
4-Tier Round Cake (4", 6", 8", & 10") Serves approx. 130 guests with 1" x 1" x 4" wedding servings. A beautiful choice for larger weddings.
5-Tier Round Cake (4", 6", 8", 10", & 12") Serves approx. 226 guests with 1" x 1" x 4" wedding servings. Perfect for grand weddings.
Venue Serving Practices
Check with Your Venue: Some venues may cut smaller slices to extend the servings, which could affect your initial plan. Be sure to clarify your serving preferences with your venue to avoid aserving errors.
